Soilscapes

Soilscapes are an easy-to-understand classification of soils used to describe the soils of England and Wales only (a separate classification being applied in Scotland and Northern Ireland). Soilscapes conveys a summary of the broad regional differences in the soil landscapes of England and Wales. Soilscapes is not intended as a means for supporting detailed assessments, such as land planning applications or site investigations; nor should it be used to support commercial activities. For such applications, a parallel service Soils Site Reporter provides comprehensive reporting for specific locations. More detailed soil datasets are also available for lease from CEC.

Raised bog peat soils (26)

Texture: Peaty
Drainage: Naturally wet
Fertility: Very low
Land Cover: Bog; grassland and some arable
Habitats: Raised bog communities
Topsoil Carbon: High
Mostly Drains To: Local groundwater and stream network
Water Protection Issues: Cultivated soils are drained. Shallow groundwater and marginal ditches to most fields mean that the water resource is vulnerable to pollution from nutrients applied to the land. Drainage of peats containing sulphide will release extremely acid drainage water
General Cropping Guidance: Once drained, soils are suitable for arable and horticultural cropping but cultivation leads to gradual loss of the peat through wind erosion and oxidation
